CUNY Professor Receives Green Party Nod for Governor's Race

CUNY professor Stanley Aronowitz received the Green Party nomination for governor Saturday at the party's state convention in Ithaca. Aronowitz is a longtime labor activist and the author of more than 20 books including "The Knowledge Factory" and "From the Ashes of the Old, American Labor and America's Future". The New York Greens also nominated a community organizer, a lawyer/organic farmer and an anti-corporate welfare activist for lieutenant governor, attorney general and state comptroller.

Community Reporting Workshop Saturday

The NYC-IMC Print Team will hold an all-day community reporting workshop Saturday June 1 from 1-6 p.m. at our office on 34 East 29th St. We will review the basics of journalism and then explore lead writing, interviewing, story research and how to develop news and human interest stories. There will be hands-on exercises, role plays and small discussion groups. Prepare to do lots of writing.

Ex-NYPD Officer Gets 15 Years for Fatal DWI Crash

Former NYPD officer Joseph Gray was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison for wiping out a family of four last August while driving drunk in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Victor Herrera, who lost his wife, two infant sons and sister-in-law in the accident, said 15 years was too lenient for the disgraced cop. "Fifteen years is not enough for a person who is arrogant and thinks he did nothing wrong," he said. Highlighting the difference in sentencing for alcohol and drug offences, the state's harsh drug laws mandate a stiffer sentence, 15 years to life, for mere possession of some narcotics. Gray, 41, will be eligible for parole in five years. And according to an exclusive NYC Indymedia report from earlier this month, Gray is already receiving special treatment from fellow law enforcement officers.
